Dan Clodfelter was graduated from Davidson College (cum laud, Phi Beta Kappa) and in 1972 and won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. He received a law degree from Yale University in 1977, and was admitted to the North Carolina Bar that same year.

Dan is active in numerous professional and civic organizations. He was a member of the Charlotte City Council from 1987 to 1993, and is a past chairman of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission. He is a trustee of Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Inc. and was a member of the Commission on the Future of the Courts and Justice in North Carolina.

In 1998, Dan Clodfelter successfully campaigned for election to the North Carolina Senate, representing the citizens of District 37. During his first term, he was instrumental in passing legislation to modernize and improve various statutes relating to the regulation of business entities and the enhancement of economic opportunities for the people of North Carolina. He was reelected to the Senate in 2000 and currently continues to serve as an effective spokesman for the people of North Carolina with particular emphasis on economic development.
